Ford Powerstroke Transmission and Driveline Lubrication
Hello, my name is Dave Mann. I am a
Detroit Michigan Truck/Automotive Engineer and Lubrication
Specialist with 24 years OEM industry engineering experience.
I am also a longstanding Professional
Grade member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). This
prestigious position is ONLY granted to degreed engineers with
documented professional work experience in the vehicle and
component engineering industry.
The purpose of this website is to provide a source of expert lubrication
and filtration engineering and technical knowledge and assistance
unequaled in the business. My primary focus is to provide
comprehensive technical information regarding engine and powertrain
lubrication and filtration for the Ford Powerstroke Diesel, Dodge
Cummins Turbo Diesel and the GM Duramax Diesel.
Although I have been a Ford Engineer my entire career
and specialize in the Ford 6.0L and 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel, I
am have extensive experience with the Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel and
GM Duramax Diesel as well.

Ford 7.3L and
6.0L Power Stroke Diesels Fully Equipped with AMSOIL Products
My area of engineering expertise encompasses all components and systems
on these vehicles, however my specialty is engine, chassis and
powertrain lubrication and filtration.
Ford Powerstroke Transmission and Driveline Lubrication
The pre-1999 Powerstrokes with an automatic transmission utilize a E4OD
model transmission. The E40D was utilized in approximately 1989 to
1998 model year Powerstrokes equipped F- Series and E-Series
vehicles. The E40D was replaced in 1999 by the 4R100. The
4R100 is very similar to the E40D. The nomenclature changed to
reflect Ford's new method for naming transmissions. The 4 means 4
speed, R means it is a RWD ( rear wheel drive transmission, as
opposed to a FWD transmission) and the 100 means the transmission is
engineered to withstand 1000 lb.-ft. torque. It is not the intention
of this website to cover the engineering and technical differences
between the two models, but rather to cover the lubrication
requirements.
Note that the lighter duty F150 and E-150 use the 4R70W transmission,
which is a 4 speed, wide ratio (W), RWD transmission engineered for
700 lb.-ft. torque.
Both the E40D and the 4R100 hold 17.7 quarts of Mercon ATF on a dry fill.
A dry fill is performed on initial fill at the factory. When
changing your ATF the best method to use is to utilize a
transmission fluid exchange machine, which are approximately 99%
efficient at removing all the old ATF from the torque converter,
lines, cooler, valve body, transmission internal housing and pan.
Draining the pan does absolutely nothing other than contaminate the
new oil with the old ATF. The most you can get out of a pan drain is
about 4 quarts.
All the Ford Dealerships are required to have a Ford approved transmission
fluid exchange machine. Most all quick lubes and quality service
centers also have the exchange machines. The machines are filled
with whatever fluid that particular business uses. To use AMSOIL in
your transmission bring 5 gallons ( 20 quarts), part # ATF-05, to
the service center that is going to do the work. You'll need the few
extra quarts in the 5 gallon size to purge the lines on the machine
of whatever type and brand ATF they are currently using.
AMSOIL Universal ATF meets and exceeds all Ford Mercon and Mercon V
specifications. The drain interval specification is 3 times Ford's
recommendations.
As a Lubrication
Specialist with over 22 years experience, I am extremely familiar
with the Mercon/MerconV fluids. The differences between Mercon V and
Mercon are minor and have absolutely nothing to do with the
durability or function of the trans but rather the shift quality.
You would have to be a highly skilled transmission engineer with
specialized equipment to discern the shift quality differences
between the two. Ford wants certain transmissions to shift smooth so
the driver cannot tell it is shifting and other vehicles they want
to have a slightly firmer shift feel. They tailor the shift quality
via the fluid differences. Both Mercon and Mercon V are still
hydraulic fluids and will operate the transmission hydraulically the
same. Differences come in shift quality and has nothing to do with
the function or durability of the transmission. AMSOIL ATF meets
and exceeds both the Mercon V and Mercon spec and is tested to meet
each one separately.
In my Powerstrokes and
other Ford trucks I modify the electronics and/or valve body of all my
transmissions for a firm crisp shift. Smooth mushy shifting is
detrimental to long trans life because it allows for a controlled
rate of plate slippage which over an extended period of time can
potentially cause heat build up, glazing, wear, hardening or plate
material and eventually failure, especially under severe use.
However if Ford engineered their transmissions to shift overly firm
that would lead most likely to customer complaints.
For the 6.0L Powerstroke
with the Torqueshift Transmission Ford uses SP rated ATF which the
AMSOIL Universal ATF is recommended for.
Servicing of this transmission has to be performed using a
Transmission Fluid Exchange Machine. All Ford Dealers as well as
many quick lubes and service centers have these machines. If you do
not want to have the procedure performed utilizing an exchange
machine, there is a detailed manual procedure that you can use,
however it is time consuming and you'll need some extra transmission
fluid. If you plan on performing the manual procedure please email
me at
dave@performanceoiltechnology.com and I will email you the
detailed procedure.

Automatic Transmission Durability Everyone knows that proper engine lubrication is
essential to improved engine life. Heat can cause
melting and fusing of engine components. Precision
clearances between components and bearings call for a
high degree of protection to prevent wear and eventual
breakdown.
As important as these factors are for
engines, many people are surprised to learn that
transmissions face similar conditions and stresses in
everyday operation. Today’s transmissions are built to
smaller design specifications than their predecessors.
Shorter automobile frames and innovative
drivetrain designs have
called for transmissions to be scaled down and at the
same time have tighter tolerances and higher energy
densities than ever before.
All of these added stresses due to transmission
composition have increased transmission temperatures and
the overall performance level required of fluids past
anything the industry has seen before. Today’s ATF must
withstand all of these new stresses and at the same time
meet the original equipment manufacturers’ longer
recommended fluid drain intervals.
Of all the stresses that ATF encounters, heat is the
most destructive. In fact, transmission life expectancy
is directly related to how well the fluid is able to
disperse heat and maintain temperatures within normal
operating ranges.
Most automatic transmission failures are caused by
heat. When conventional petroleum fluid temperatures
exceed 200 degrees F, they break down, causing seals to
crack and leaks to occur. In fact, approximately
every 20 degree increase in temperature over the normal
175 degree F will reduce a transmission’s life
expectancy by 50 percent! It’s easy to see why it
is so important to use a quality transmission fluid that
can disperse this heat effectively, especially when
every 20 degree drop in oil temperature will double both
the life of the fluid and the transmission.
Realizing that tougher fluids were needed to
withstand such demanding stresses, the major automobile
manufacturers each designed their own ATF fluids which
they recommend for their vehicles. General Motors
recommends “Dexron II” and “Dexron
III” in their new models. Ford uses the “Mercon”
and “Mercon V” transmission
fluids in their vehicles. And Chrysler has been
recommending their “ATF +” series for some time. Each
manufacturer has specific requirements and preferences
when it comes to automatic transmission fluids.
But with all of these different requirements
mandating different fluid types, it becomes much more
difficult for Dealers and Retailers to market ATF to
auto owners. AMSOIL has designed an ATF that can cover
all of the major auto manufacturers’ specifications and
even those of most foreign and specialty manufacturers
as well. The new AMSOIL ATF is the only fluid in the
world which can cover all of the various auto
applications that automatic transmission fluids are
designed for. While others have to produce and
inventory two, three or even four types of transmission
fluids to cover these applications, AMSOIL and AMSOIL
Dealers have the benefit of needing only one product,
and the customer benefits from that same value.
The new AMSOIL ATF offers superior high and low
temperature performance. It cools and protects hot
running transmissions towing heavy loads far better than
conventional fluids. For cold weather applications, it
remains fluid down to –72 degrees F to improve subzero
performance and fuel economy. It can also improve
shifting by keeping transitions between gears smooth.
AMSOIL ATF is also highly resistant to thermal
breakdown and oxidation. It offers the most complete
protection for equipment from damaging sludge and
varnish deposits. And by acting as an excellent heat
dispersal system, AMSOIL ATF can actually deliver up to
three to five times the service life of petroleum
fluid.

When tested against conventional petroleum fluids,
AMSOIL ATF was able to maintain its viscosity and resist
chemical breakdown for over 900 hours of operating
time. The conventional petroleum fluids could not last
past the 300 hour mark.
The reason rests with the composition of the
individual fluids. When compared to petroleum fluids,
synthetics exhibit a more constant heat dispersion which
is not diminished over time by heavy stress and high
heat loads. Petroleum-based fluids, on the other hand,
are more likely to break down over time when subjected
to heavy loads and high heat. This can result in sludge
and varnish formation. Over time and higher heat, these
varnishes and lack of lubrication can cause seals to
harden, plates to slip, and finally, seals and clutches
to burn out when the oil forms carbon.

8.2% More
MPG
with AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants
Replacing
popular conventional engine and driveline lubricants
with AMSOIL synthetic lubricants in Class 8
diesel-fueled vehicles increases fuel mileage up to
8.2% according
to the findings of an independent test facility.
Fuel accounts for roughly 37 percent
of Class 8 truck operating expenses, and reducing
fuel expenses is a top priority for truck operators.
AMSOIL is the leader in the race to
develop fuel efficient low-viscosity lubricants for
trucking and other heavy-duty diesel applications.
Independent laboratory testing shows AMSOIL Series
3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil in the
engine and AMSOIL synthetics in the drivetrain
provide up to 8.2 percent more miles-per-gallon than
other popular lubricants provide.
Introduction
At the request of AMSOIL INC., an independent
research institute conducted a month-long test
com-paring the fuel consumption of Class 8 diesel
trucks equipped with AMSOIL synthetic lubricants to
Class 8 diesel trucks equipped with conventional
lubricants.
The research institute used the SAE
J1321 Joint TMC/SAE Fuel Consumption Test
Procedure-Type II, an industry standard test
procedure for comparing in-service fuel consumption
of a vehicle operated under two conditions, one with
the control lubricants in place, the other with the
test lubricants in place.
Vehicles and
Route
The
three test and one control vehicles were 1995
International Model 9200 truck-tractors with Cummins
M-11 engines (rated at 350 hp at 1600 rpm), Fuller
RTXF 14710B transmissions, Eaton Model DS/RS 404
drive axles (3.90 ratio), 11R-24.5 low-profile tires
and new oil and air filters. All four vehicles had
been operated between 250,000 and 285,000 miles
prior to the study.
The trucks were equipped with
auxiliary weigh fuel tanks and quick disconnect
couplings to facilitate accurate data gathering.
Each truck pulled a 45-foot long flatbed trailer
equipped with 11R-24.5 low-profile tires and loaded
with concrete blocks so that the gross vehicle
weight (GVW) of each vehicle was 75,550 +/-100 lbs.
The
test route represented typical long-haul interstate
highway operations, with asphalt road surfaces and
generally flat terrain. The low traffic density
route covered a total of 40 miles with a 20-mile
southbound segment and the return north-bound
segment. Fuel consumption was measured separately
for each direction.
Lubricants
and Fuels
The control lubricants were Shell Rotella T 15W-40
for the engines, Quaker State SAE 90 for the
transmissions and Citco 85W-140 for the drive axles.
The control truck used the control lubricants for
all driving segments and the test trucks used the
control lubricants for their baseline segments.
The test lubricants were AMSOIL
Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil
for the engines, AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 20W-50
Racing Oil for the transmissions and AMSOIL Series
2000 Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube for the drive axles.
The test vehicles used the test lubricants for their
test segments.
All vehicles used Exxon No. 2 diesel
fuel dispensed from the same storage tank for all
driving segments.
Procedure
Each test vehicle ran a baseline segment, in which
the truck was equipped with the control lubricants,
and three test segments, in which it was equipped
with test lubricants. The control vehicle
concurrently ran each driving segment using control
lubricants.
Conditions including speed, tire
pressure, headlight and fan use and window openings
were held constant between all vehicles in each
driving segment. Finally, testing proceeded only if
wind direction, wind speed and temperature were
within test parameters.
Results
The weight of fuel consumed by each test vehicle and
the weight of fuel consumed by the control vehicle
in each driving segment were used to determine the
percentage of fuel saved and the percentage fuel
efficiency improvement obtained by the test
lubricants. Results outside 2 percent of the norm
were discarded.
Findings
The vehicles equipped with AMSOIL synthetic
lubricants in the engines, transmissions and drive
axles demonstrated up to an 8.2 percent increase in
miles per gallon (mpg) over the mpg obtained by the
vehicles equipped with the control lubricants.
Discussion
Test conditions were held close to ideal for maximum
fuel economy. In many instances of less-than-ideal
conditions, the synthetic test lubricants would have
provided even more fuel economy improvement. For
example, synthetics superior cold temperature
fluidity provides a larger proportion of fuel
savings in cold operating conditions.
Additionally, while the present
study did not include analysis of wear control, wear
control is an important issue with low viscosity
lubricants and one fully addressed by AMSOIL through
additional testing.
Traditionally, the benefit of
improved fuel economy provided by low viscosity
lubricants is offset by a penalty in wear control.
Such is not the case with Series 2000 and 3000
lubricants, as evidenced by Four-Ball Wear testing
conducted by an independent laboratory (results
shown on product labels) and a growing body of
demonstration and on-road data.
For
example, an ongoing fleet demonstration is providing
evidence of the excellent wear control of Series
3000. Since January 1996, AMSOIL and a northern tier
trucking fleet have been conducting a demonstration
using Series 3000 in the 1996 Cummins N-14 ESP3
engines of five 1996 Kenworth class 8 trucks.
The trucks traveled 125,000 miles
with-out an oil change and the rate of wear metal
generation found in used Series 3000 samples was
lower than that found in used control oil, Pennzoil
Long Life 15W-40, which is changed at 20,000-mile
intervals.
Additionally, the viscometrics of
the AMSOIL fluids provide a wear control benefit in
cold temperature applications since low viscosity
fluids flow more freely in cold temperatures than
high viscosity fluids do. Oils that flow easily in
cold temperatures provide faster post-startup wear
protection in cold engines than do less fluid oils.
They also provide easier starting and reduced
battery drain.
Finally, AMSOIL product users are
protected by the AMSOIL warranty, which, unlike
warranties offered by other oil companies, is not
limited by time or mileage and does not require user
registration and approval.
Conclusion
AMSOIL synthetic engine, transmission and drive axle
lubricants provide a safe and effective means to
significantly increase class 8 truck fuel economy.
AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30
Heavy Duty Diesel Motor Oil provides better wear
protection than these popular high viscosity diesel
oils. In fact, independent testing showed the
high-viscosity oils tested produced wear scars up to
45 percent larger than that of Series 3000.
What Does a
Savings of 8.2% Mean?
Imagine a fleet of 100 class 8
vehicles running an average 120,000 miles per year
at an average 6.5 mpg with diesel fuel at $1.35 a
gallon. The fleet spends $2,492,308 on fuel
annually. Now imagine the fleet uses AMSOIL products
and improves its miles-per-gallon by 8.2 percent.
The fleet now spends $2,303,427 on fuel annually.
Thats a
savings of $188,881! That money could buy
a years worth of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants for the
fleet plus a years fuel for 3 to 6 trucks with cash
left over!
