Hello, my name is Dave Mann. I am a
Detroit Michigan Truck/Automotive
Engineer and Lubrication Specialist with 22 years OEM industry experience.
I am also a longstanding Professional
Grade member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). This
prestigious position is ONLY granted to degreed engineers with
documented professional work experience in the vehicle and
component engineering industry.
The purpose of this website is to provide a source of expert lubrication
and filtration engineering and technical knowledge and assistance
unequaled in the business. The primary focus will be engine and
powertrain lubrication and filtration for the Ford Powerstroke
Diesel, Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel and the Chevrolet Duramax Diesel.
Duramax Diesel Differential and Axles
The axle used in the Duramax Diesel is manufactured by American Axle and
Manufacturing. The differential offered is a 3.73:1 ratio only. The
3500 Series trucks utilize an 11.5 inch diameter ring gear with an
Eaton G80 mechanical locker. The 2500 Series utilizes a 10.5 inch
diameter ring gear and the 1500 Series utilizes an 8.6 or 9.5 inch
ring gear depending on the engine size.
The 1500 and 2500 Series trucks and the 3500 Series are available
with an Eaton Electronic Locking Rear Differential. This innovative
differential is engineered to evenly distribute power to both rear
wheels in conditions such as mud, snow, ice, sand, etc while at
lower speeds it automatically senses wheel spin and locks the rear
axle and transfers torque to the rear wheel with more traction.
The preferred lubricant for this axle is 75W-90. 75W-90 is recommend
by GM., as well as many other manufacturers, because it is more fuel
efficient than a 75W-140. Ford uses 75W-140 synthetic in the rear
axles of all production trucks. GM prefers 75W-90 mainly due to fuel
economy concerns for CAFE.
Note that I personally prefer the 75W-140
because during extensive severe durability testing performed during
my engineering career the 75W140 outperformed the 75W-90. That does
not mean the 75W-90 is not good to use, just that the 75W-140 is
better under certain severe conditions. Also, most front
differentials recommend 75W-90 or 80W-90 because the front axle is
typically not used very much so they can get by with a lower cost
oil.
For all sizes of the the Duramax Diesel differentials/axles I recommend
the AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 Gear Lube in both the front and read
differentials. If you operate under extreme severe duty conditions
then the Severe Gear 75W-140 is an excellent choice.
You do not need AMSOIL Slip Lock friction modifier or the
manufacturer brand friction modifier unless you hear chatter on
turns, which only happens in a very small percentage of
applications. In some rare cases if you do hear chatter on turns
then you will need to install a bottle of AMSOIL's Slip-Lock
Differential Additive (Product Code: ADA). Its convenient flip-top dispenser provides quick and
easy application to the gear housing. One four-ounce bottle of
Slip-Lock treats differential capacities of two to four quarts.
AHEAD OF THE
CURVE
AMSOIL Introduces Its New Line of Synthetic Gear
Lubes
The automotive industry is not static. With technology
constantly improving, vehicle and engine designs change.
Today's vehicle line-up is vastly different than it was
10 years ago, with SUVs and trucks representing the
fastest growing segment of the U.S. automotive market.
In addition, the industry is moving away from front
wheel drive vehicles, and rear wheel drive vehicles are
making a strong comeback. The rapidly changing and
diversifying vehicle market requires new and improved
gear lubricants.
What has changed?
Modern vehicles are designed with more horsepower and
torque than in years past, allowing them to haul and tow
heavier and heavier loads. This results in higher gear
loading and hotter running differentials. In addition,
factors such as increased interior space and lower floor
boards push axles higher into the vehicle's body,
reducing air flow and increasing heat. The closer
proximity of the axles to the exhaust system also
effectively raises heat, while more aerodynamic body
styles and air dams result in restricted airflow to the
differentials.
A number of factors causes SUV, pickup truck and van
gears to operate under more severe conditions than
over-the-road trucks, contributing to increased
temperatures, higher gear loading and shorter drain
intervals. First, these vehicles have smaller gear that
must handle higher loads per square inch of surface
area. Second, their smaller sump sizes (and lower volume
of gear lube) cannot dissipate heat as well as larger
sump sizes. Third, air flow is significantly reduced
compared to over-the-road trucks. Fourth, these vehicles
are subject to more frequent stop and go driving
conditions and are more susceptible to moisture from
condensation due to varying temperature fluctuations.
The AMSOIL Solution
In order to optimize its gear lubes for modern
applications, AMSOIL has updated its gear lube
formulations.
SEVERE GEAR™ Synthetic Extreme Pressure Gear Lubes
(75W-90 & 75W-140)
Specially formulated for severe duty applications,
AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR™ Synthetic Extreme Pressure Gear
Lubes are excellent for vehicles that experience towing,
hauling, steep hill driving, commercial use, racing,
off-road use, rapid acceleration, stop and go driving
and high ambient temperatures. AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR™ Gear
Lubes are formulated with increased levels of premium
quality additives, allowing improved limited-slip and
locking differential performance. And with high
viscosity indices, SEVERE GEAR™ Gear Lubes provide an
extra level of protection at high temperatures. Extra
additives provide additional insurance against wear in
case of a lubricant film breach. These additives provide
an iron sulfide barrier coating that effectively
prevents micro-welding that leads to heat and friction.
This allows AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR™ Gear Lubes to prevent
thermal runaway, a phenomenon caused by a lubricant's
inability to control friction and increased heat under
high-stress conditions! By preventing thermal
runaway, AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR™ Gear Lubes inhibit
component damage and rapid lubricant degradation.
SEVERE GEAR™ Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube (SVG)
replaces Series 2000 Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube (TGR).
SEVERE GEAR™ Synthetic 75W-140 Gear Lube (SVO) replaces
Series 2000 Synthetic 75W-140 Gear Lube (TGO).
Long Life Synthetic Gear Lubes (75W-90 and 80W-140)
AMSOIL Long Life Synthetic Gear Lubes are formulated
with new and enhanced additives designed specifically
for extended drain intervals of up to 500,000 miles in
over-the-road trucks.
Long Life Synthetic Gear Lubes are engineered to protect
gears better than conventional gear oils, resisting
acid, carbon and varnish formation and oxidative
breakdown. Their superior shear stability allow them to
maintain their viscosity during extended service. The
enhanced 80W-140 formulation replaces the former 85W-140
formulation, allowing a greater operating range and
improved cold temperature performance.
AMSOIL Long Life Synthetic Gear Lubes are available in
five gallon buckets, excellent for use with lube
dispensing pumps.
Long Life Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube (FGR) replaces
Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube (AGR).
Long Life Synthetic 80W-140 Gear Lube (FGO) replaces
Synthetic 85W-140 Gear Lube (AGO).
80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube
The 80W-90 gear lube market is mineral oil based. New
reformulated AMSOIL 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube is
designed as a high quality synthetic replacement for
mineral gear oils. It is a multifunctional product
designed to surpass the requirements of equipment and
automotive applications calling for an SAE 80W-90
viscosity grade. Its naturally high viscosity index and
shear stable construction provide improved cold
temperature performance, while extreme pressure
additives provide excellent protection for gears and
bearings. AMSOIL 80W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube is
competitively priced, making it an excellent choice for
cost-conscious customers. |

AMSOIL
Severe Gear Synthetic Extreme Pressure (EP) Lubricants are
premium grade lubricants specifically engineered for maximum
performance in severe duty applications. These
state-of-the-art AMSOIL formulations feature an exclusive
blend of high viscosity, shear stable synthetic base oils
and an extra treatment of high-performance additives. AMSOIL
Severe Gear Synthetic EP Lubricants maintain their viscosity
for long-lasting protection against metal-to-metal contact.
The proprietary AMSOIL additives form an iron-sulfide
barrier coating on gear surfaces, providing the ultimate
line of defense against wear, pitting and scoring. AMSOIL
Severe Gear lubricants prevent "thermal runaway" - a
phenomenon caused by a lubricant's inability to control
friction and increased heat under high-stress conditions. By
preventing thermal runaway, AMSOIL Severe Gear Synthetic EP
Lubricants inhibit rapid lubricant degradation and component
damage. Equipment runs better and lasts longer with AMSOIL
Severe Gear Synthetic EP Lubricants.

Performance
AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR™ provides performance beyond that
possible with conventional gear oil. These AMSOIL custom
products offer superior gear and bearing protection, better
friction and heat reduction, increased efficiency and
extended service life.
Temperature Extremes
AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR™ EP lubricants excel in hot and cold
temperature extremes. By design, they resist breakdown from
high heat, preventing acids and carbon/varnish formation.
Their waxfree construction also improves cold flow
properties, improving fuel economy and cold weather
shifting.

Effectively Eliminates Gear Housing Chatter
When
making a turn, the outer wheels of a vehicle must travel
faster than the inner wheels. It is up to the
differential to act as a balance arm, establishing
constant equilibrium of torques and forces between the
left-hand and right-hand driven wheels. In standard (or
open) differentials, power is directed to the wheel
offering the least resistance. This works well when
making a turn, but in a situation where one wheel is
lifted off the ground, it causes the suspended wheel to
turn while the other remains motionless.
Limited-slip (or positraction) and locking
differentials are traction-increasing devices. Locking
differentials transfer all available torque to both
wheels. The teeth of the spider assembly engage with
those on the locker clutch, causing both axle shafts to
operate as one. Locking differentials don't allow one
drive wheel to spin while the other remains stationary.
Instead, they keep both wheels in drive mode, but unlock
to permit different wheel speeds when turning. The
engaging and disengaging of the teeth on automatic
locking differentials often causes a banging and
clunking sound. Manual locking differentials usually use
an electric motor or vacuum diaphragm to engage the
locker, reducing this noise.
Limited-slip
differentials allow different wheel speeds when turning,
but when one wheel loses traction, greater torque is
transferred to the wheel offering more resistance.
Limited-slip differentials make use of friction between
clutch plates, as opposed to the meshing teeth employed
by locking differentials. Transferring less torque per
side, limited-slip differentials are generally smoother
and quieter than locking differentials, but still
sometimes "chatter" when transferring torque to the
wheel with traction.
In some differential applications, a friction
modifier additive is necessary to reduce chatter. AMSOIL
Slip-Lock Differential Additive is formulated with
advanced friction modifiers and is designed to eliminate
gear-housing chatter in cars, trucks and SUVs equipped
with limited-slip, positraction and locking
differentials. It also reduces the banging and clunking
associated with automatic locking differentials.
AMSOIL Slip-Lock Differential Additive is formulated
for use with both synthetic and petroleum gear
lubricants and safely replaces manufacturer recommended
friction modifiers. Its convenient flip-top dispenser
provides quick and easy application to the gear housing.
One four-ounce bottle of Slip-Lock treats differential
capacities of two to four quarts. It is not for use in
automatic transmissions or other applications requiring
ATF.
NOTE: AMSOIL Synthetic Gear Lubes do not require
the use of this additive. However, not all differentials
respond the same and if chatter is noticed, the addition
of AMSOIL Slip-Lock will eliminate it. For chattering
differentials not running AMSOIL Gear Lube, this product
is an excellent solution to the problem.

Procedure-Type II, an industry standard test
procedure for comparing in-service fuel consumption
of a vehicle operated under two conditions, one with
the control lubricants in place, the other with the
test lubricants in place.
Vehicles and
Route
The
three test and one control vehicles were 1995
International Model 9200 truck-tractors with Cummins
M-11 engines (rated at 350 hp at 1600 rpm), Fuller
RTXF 14710B transmissions, Eaton Model DS/RS 404
drive axles (3.90 ratio), 11R-24.5 low-profile tires
and new oil and air filters. All four vehicles had
been operated between 250,000 and 285,000 miles
prior to the study.
The trucks were equipped with
auxiliary weigh fuel tanks and quick disconnect
couplings to facilitate accurate data gathering.
Each truck pulled a 45-foot long flatbed trailer
equipped with 11R-24.5 low-profile tires and loaded
with concrete blocks so that the gross vehicle
weight (GVW) of each vehicle was 75,550 +/-100 lbs.
The
test route represented typical long-haul interstate
highway operations, with asphalt road surfaces and
generally flat terrain. The low traffic density
route covered a total of 40 miles with a 20-mile
southbound segment and the return north-bound
segment. Fuel consumption was measured separately
for each direction.
Lubricants
and Fuels
The control lubricants were Shell Rotella T 15W-40
for the engines, Quaker State SAE 90 for the
transmissions and Citco 85W-140 for the drive axles.
The control truck used the control lubricants for
all driving segments and the test trucks used the
control lubricants for their baseline segments.
The test lubricants were AMSOIL
Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil
for the engines, AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 20W-50
Racing Oil for the transmissions and AMSOIL Series
2000 Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube for the drive axles.
The test vehicles used the test lubricants for their
test segments.
All vehicles used Exxon No. 2 diesel
fuel dispensed from the same storage tank for all
driving segments.
Procedure
Each test vehicle ran a baseline segment, in which
the truck was equipped with the control lubricants,
and three test segments, in which it was equipped
with test lubricants. The control vehicle
concurrently ran each driving segment using control
lubricants.
Conditions including speed, tire
pressure, headlight and fan use and window openings
were held constant between all vehicles in each
driving segment. Finally, testing proceeded only if
wind direction, wind speed and temperature were
within test parameters.
Results
The weight of fuel consumed by each test vehicle and
the weight of fuel consumed by the control vehicle
in each driving segment were used to determine the
percentage of fuel saved and the percentage fuel
efficiency improvement obtained by the test
lubricants. Results outside 2 percent of the norm
were discarded.
Findings
The vehicles equipped with AMSOIL synthetic
lubricants in the engines, transmissions and drive
axles demonstrated up to an 8.2 percent increase in
miles per gallon (mpg) over the mpg obtained by the
vehicles equipped with the control lubricants.
Discussion
Test conditions were held close to ideal for maximum
fuel economy. In many instances of less-than-ideal
conditions, the synthetic test lubricants would have
provided even more fuel economy improvement. For
example, synthetics superior cold temperature
fluidity provides a larger proportion of fuel
savings in cold operating conditions.
Additionally, while the present
study did not include analysis of wear control, wear
control is an important issue with low viscosity
lubricants and one fully addressed by AMSOIL through
additional testing.
Traditionally, the benefit of
improved fuel economy provided by low viscosity
lubricants is offset by a penalty in wear control.
Such is not the case with Series 2000 and 3000
lubricants, as evidenced by Four-Ball Wear testing
conducted by an independent laboratory (results
shown on product labels) and a growing body of
demonstration and on-road data.
For
example, an ongoing fleet demonstration is providing
evidence of the excellent wear control of Series
3000. Since January 1996, AMSOIL and a northern tier
trucking fleet have been conducting a demonstration
using Series 3000 in the 1996 Cummins N-14 ESP3
engines of five 1996 Kenworth class 8 trucks.
The trucks traveled 125,000 miles
with-out an oil change and the rate of wear metal
generation found in used Series 3000 samples was
lower than that found in used control oil, Pennzoil
Long Life 15W-40, which is changed at 20,000-mile
intervals.
Additionally, the viscometrics of
the AMSOIL fluids provide a wear control benefit in
cold temperature applications since low viscosity
fluids flow more freely in cold temperatures than
high viscosity fluids do. Oils that flow easily in
cold temperatures provide faster post-startup wear
protection in cold engines than do less fluid oils.
They also provide easier starting and reduced
battery drain.
Finally, AMSOIL product users are
protected by the AMSOIL warranty, which, unlike
warranties offered by other oil companies, is not
limited by time or mileage and does not require user
registration and approval.
Conclusion
AMSOIL synthetic engine, transmission and drive axle
lubricants provide a safe and effective means to
significantly increase class 8 truck fuel economy.
AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30
Heavy Duty Diesel Motor Oil provides better wear
protection than these popular high viscosity diesel
oils. In fact, independent testing showed the
high-viscosity oils tested produced wear scars up to
45 percent larger than that of Series 3000.
What Does a
Savings of 8.2% Mean?
Imagine a fleet of 100 class 8
vehicles running an average 120,000 miles per year
at an average 6.5 mpg with diesel fuel at $1.35 a
gallon. The fleet spends $2,492,308 on fuel
annually. Now imagine the fleet uses AMSOIL products
and improves its miles-per-gallon by 8.2 percent.
The fleet now spends $2,303,427 on fuel annually.
Thats a
savings of $188,881! That money could buy
a years worth of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants for the
fleet plus a years fuel for 3 to 6 trucks with cash
left over!
