Hello, my name is Dave Mann. I am a Detroit Michigan  Truck/Automotive Engineer and Lubrication Specialist with  23 years OEM industry engineering experience.

I am also a longstanding Professional Grade member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). This prestigious position is ONLY granted to degreed engineers with documented professional work experience in the  vehicle and component engineering industry.

The purpose of this website is to provide a source of expert lubrication and filtration engineering and technical knowledge and assistance unequaled in the business. My primary focus  is to provide comprehensive technical information regarding engine and powertrain lubrication and filtration for the Ford Powerstroke Diesel, Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel and the GM Duramax Diesel.

Although I have been a Ford Engineer my entire career and specialize in the Ford 6.4L, 6.0L and 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel, I have extensive experience with the Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel and GM Duramax Diesel as well.

Diesel Fuel and Diesel Fuel Additives

Diesel fuel is a highly complex fuel. It changes chemical structure during the time after it leaves the refinery to the time it  is pumped into holding tanks and into the fuel station to the time it gets pumped into your vehicle. Fuel molecules oxidize and change structure and the energy per unit volume of the fuel can change during this process which can negatively affect the performance of your engine. By using the proper type and ratio of fuel additives you can effectively combat the effects of fuel degradation and increase the cetane value of the fuel and allows the engine to extract more power from a gallon of fuel, plus numerous other benefits.

Diesel fuel contains more energy per gallon than gasoline. The three types of diesel fuel are 1D, 2D and a blend of the tow used during the winter.  1D is a lighter grade of fuel and provides less energy than 2D. Generally 1D can be used to reduce/eliminate fuel gelling in cold winter climates or it can be mixed with 2D.

The ignition quality of diesel fuel is measured by its cetane rating. The higher the cetane level the easier the fuel burns evenly and the produces power. Average diesel fuel is approximately a 40 cetane level. Large diesel trucks and diesel pickup trucks such as the Powerstroke Diesel, Duramax  Diesel and Cummins Turbodiesel prefer a higher cetane rating in the 45-50 range which is considered premium diesel. However, just because a diesel fuel pump says "premium" on it does not necessarily mean that the cetane level is between 45-50 since different states have different regulations addressing what constitutes a premium diesel fuel.

I recommend checking with the particular fuel station as to exactly what cetane levels the fuel is they are selling, or if you use the station regularly have the fuel tested to be assured of quality fuel. Higher cetane numbers produce improved driveability, reduced emissions and black smoke and the driver of the vehicle can feel the power difference a quality fuel with a high cetane number produces. This is why I recommend AMSOIL Cetane Boost Additive to be used with each tank of fuel.  With the AMSOIL Cetane Boost you can be assured your fuel is of the optimum cetane level for maximum performance regardless of where you purchase your fuel.

Diesel Fuels Changing to Meet New Standards

Diesel engine technology is rapidly evolving to meet new emissions standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that will go into effect in 2006. Substantial reductions in particulate matter and nitrogen oxides are required of newer engines, resulting in the use of exhaust aftertreatment devices. These devices are easily poisoned by sulfur, so the pressure is on to further reduce the level of sulfur in diesel fuels.

The EPA has proposed a cap of 15 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur in diesel fuel beginning in 2006. Currently the level is 500 ppm. This has led to a new class of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuels (ULSD) with levels of 50 ppm sulfur or lower.

New emission standards for heavy-duty truck and bus engines begin with the model year 2004 and reflect the provisions of the Statement of Principles (SOP) signed in 1995 by the EPA, The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the manufacturers of heavy-duty diesel engines. The goal was to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission levels from highway heavy-duty engines to approximately 2 grams per brake horsepower per hour beginning in 2004.

Further, in May 2000, the EPA announced proposed emission standards for model year 2007 and later heavy-duty highway engines to regulate diesel fuel and to create emissions standards.

The ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel has been proposed as a "technology enabler" to pave the way for advanced, sulfur-intolerant exhaust emission control technologies such as diesel particulate filters and De-Nox catalysts, which will be necessary to meet the 2007 emission standards.

To get the ultra-low-sulfur levels, refiners perform additional hydroprocessing and higher-severity hydrotreating. While these processes reduce sulfur levels, they also affect other fuel properties. These fuels lost the natural lubricity provided by some of the polar compounds present naturally in the fuel. Low-lubricity fuels can result in premature wear and failure of fuel system components.

Additionally, severely hydrotreated fuels can suffer from loss of natural antioxidants that help prevent the fuel from forming gums and sludges. A fuel's antioxidation properties are especially important in today's fuel systems, where the fuel is exposed to high temperatures. The ultra-low-sulfur fuels also can be more corrosive than conventional fuels, requiring corrosion-inhibiting additives. These fuels also can have very low electrical conductivity, causing a safety concern with components such as high-velocity pumps, where fuel can be exposed to significant static electrical charges.

Because of these challenges, some new diesel fuel blending options are being introduced. Gas to liquid (GTL) technology yields diesel blend stocks from stranded gas reserves that might not otherwise make it to market. GTL diesel fuels are desirable blending components because they have the very low sulfur levels as well as high cetane numbers.

A major percentage of all problems with diesel engines are related to fuel quality, according to Wards Auto World, an e-magazine that offers consumers free auto advice on the Internet.

Diesel fuel can vary from one shipment to another and from one area to another. Changing vendors or changes suppliers sometimes make to the fuel they sell also bring different qualities of diesel fuel to the market.

Three important components that vary the most in diesel fuel are cetane, weight and viscosity.

Cetane defines the susceptibility of the fuel to self-ignite. Acceptable cetane levels are between 40 and 45, but few fuel distributors advertise this since each batch may be different. Cetane influences both starting and combustion roughness on an engine. High altitudes and low temperatures call for a greater cetane number of the fuel.

The weight of the fuel of its gravity plays a role in the heat content of the fuel. Number one is a "lighter" grade and number two is "heavier," or weighs more per gallon. Number one provides better starting in cold temperatures, but number two has better lubricating qualities and contains more heat units (BTUs) per volume.

The number one fuel is less dense so it becomes thinner when heated than the number two fuel. As the fuel temperature continues to rise, fuel begins to leak through the high-pressure parts of the injection pump causing it to pump less fuel, and that leakage results in a power loss of between one percent and seven percent.

Diesel fuel treatments increase fuel quality and extend the lives of engines. The only way to be sure of fuel quality is to treat it with fuel additives.

AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Modifier treats and cleans the fuel system of automotive and light truck diesel engines to improve overall vehicle performance.

AMSOIL Cetane Boost Additive improves ignition quality and low-temp starting, reduces cranking time, emissions and smoke, provides smoother, quieter operation, increases efficiency and is compatible with AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Additive Concentrate.

The Diesel Fuel Additive Concentrate improves fuel economy, extends injector life, increases fuel stability, reduces emissions, improves cold fuel flow and cold startability and controls injector wear in heavy duty applications.

Diesel fuel, like diesel engines, is changing to meet emission and other
environmental requirements. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has
introduced major changes in diesel fuel for 2007, including Ultra Low
Sulfur Diesel fuel (ULSD), bringing the sulfur content to 15 ppm, a
staggering drop from the current requirement of 500 ppm. Lower sulfur means
lower lubricity, the property that controls wear in the fuel injectors and
fuel pump.

New emission regulations have brought on engine modifications such as
exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), causing rapid TBN depletion due to acid
formation and higher levels of soot loading in the oil. Higher soot and
particulate content has resulted in the introduction of diesel particulate
filters, but they clog easily, lowering engine efficiency. All of these
changes mean that new diesel fuel needs quality fuel additives to keep
equipment operating efficiently and prevent malfunction. AMSOIL has made
some changes to its line of fuel additives. The changes reflect the new
diesel fuel regulations and incorporate the latest in fuel additive
technology.

AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate has been reformulated
with additional lubricity properties. The new AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate
(ADF) is a total system cleaner and lubricity improver for all types of
diesel engines. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate compensates for the quality
variances of different fuels (including biodiesels) and the deficiencies of
today’s ULSD for better engine operation.

Reduces Cylinder Wear, Retains TBN Longer New low-emission engine models with high rates of exhaust gas recirculation have inherent lubricant
challenges. These engines dump excessive amounts of soot and acids into the
oil, accelerating wear on the cylinder walls. Additionally, new engine oils
meeting CJ-4 requirements will have lower sulfated ash content, which
controls TBN levels. The new mandate only allows enough sulfated ash
content to reach a maximum TBN of eight, making TBN retention even more
important. New AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate controls these issues by
neutralizing acids during combustion. This minimizes acidic cylinder wear
and reduces the rate of engine oil TBN depletion, maintaining engine oil
quality longer for better protection.

Minimizes Soot Loading AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate is a powerful cleaner that
cleans fuel injectors and piston rings for improved combustion and better
sealing. It minimizes soot generated from incomplete combustion and helps
keep soot out of the crankcase. Reduced soot loading controls soot related
wear and engine oil viscosity increase.

Fuel Stabilizer Fuel degradation can cause gums, which increase deposits
and the chance of filter plugging. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate significantly
improves the oxidation and thermal stability of diesel fuel. It
overcompensates for ULSD fuel’s potential stability loss caused by extra
processing and sulfur removal. Diesel fuel treated with AMSOIL Diesel
Concentrate easily meets the requirements of the National Council of
Weights and Measures (NCWM) Premium Diesel Fuel Specification for resisting
diesel fuel degradation.

Improves Fuel Economy and Restores Horsepower Diesel engines become less
efficient over time. Fuel injector deposits interrupt spray patterns,
causing poor fuel atomization, incomplete combustion, excessive emissions
and smoke. Tests prove that AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate cleans dirty
injectors, not only improving fuel economy by up to five percent, but also
restoring horsepower to like new. Acceleration is improved, and with
regular use, AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate continues to enhance performance by
keeping injectors clean.

No-Cost Additive High fuel prices are increasing operating costs for
everyone. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate has proven in industry standard tests
to improve fuel economy in used diesel engines by up to five percent. At
$3.00 per gallon for diesel fuel, even a modest three percent improvement
in fuel economy equals a savings of $0.09 per gallon. With a treat rate of
one oz. of AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate to five gallons of fuel, at U.S.
Retail price the net treat cost of AMSOIL ADF is $0.083 per gallon,
bringing the total savings to $0.007 per gallon and negating the cost of
AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate altogether.

Improves Water Tolerance AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate is an alcohol-free
product that protects fuel systems against water contamination. It helps
prevent fuel/water emulsions and it protects metal against rust. Water can
be drained easier and fuel filters are less likely to plug, ensuring
drivability.

AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate Replaces AMSOIL Diesel Modifier AMSOIL Diesel
Modifier is discontinued, and new AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate is applicable
in its place. There are no longer different fuel additives for heavy- and
light-duty diesel engines, simplifying applications for customers. New
AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate meets and exceeds all catalytic converter
requirements.

AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow Improver Combining AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate with a cold flow improvement property is not cost effective in the summer months,
or to AMSOIL customers who live in the south. To keep costs down for
customers, AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate no longer includes a cold flow
improver. Instead, AMSOIL provides new AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow Improver
(DFF) for low-temperature applications below 40°F.

Diesel fuel forms wax crystals and gels in cold temperatures, plugging the
fuel filter and affecting engine operation. AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow
Improver for diesel fuel is designed for use with ULSD, yet works well with
conventional fuels. It functions by modifying the wax crystal formation at
low temperatures to depress the pour point and improve the cold flow
filtration properties. AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow Improver lowers the cold
filter plugging point by as much as 20°F and decreases the need for #1
diesel fuel that is diluted with kerosene. AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow Improver
contains jet fuel-type deicer to help prevent ice formation in fuels
contaminated with water. It is recommended for use with diesel engines and
is compatible with diesel exhaust particulate filters (DPFs). AMSOIL Diesel
Cold Flow Improver is excellent for use with AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate and
AMSOIL Cetane Boost Additive. Recommended mix ratio is one oz. of additive
per five gallons of fuel.

Heating Oil Improver AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate provides many of the same
benefits in heating oil furnace applications. For this reason, Home Heating
Fuel Extender (AHF) is discontinued. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate provides
fuel oil storage stability, water stability, rust protection, fuel oil
filter longevity, and in certain applications its detergency properties
should keep fuel oil nozzles clean for proper spray in the combustion
chamber. AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate promotes trouble-free operation. AMSOIL
Diesel Cold Flow Improver is recommended where fuel oil is stored outside.

Recommendations AMSOIL Diesel Concentrate is recommended for use with all
types of heavy and light-duty, on or off-road and marine diesel engines.
The recommended mix ratio is one oz. of additive per five gallons of fuel.
It should be used with every new tank of fuel for the best performance and
protection against fuel pump wear, injector wear and injector deposits. It
is compatible with all types of exhaust emission systems such as diesel
particulate filters (DPFs). It is recommended that AMSOIL Diesel
Concentrate be added to fuel before storage. Diesel Concentrate is
excellent for use with AMSOIL Cetane Boost and AMSOIL Diesel Cold Flow
Improver.

Sweeping Changes All AMSOIL fuel additive products will be sold in 16 oz.
bottles that have 22 ml. openings that fit directly into gas tanks. The
bottles are natural in color with graduations on the label to ensure
correct dosages. All products have a new mix ratio of one oz. of additive
to five gallons of fuel (one bottle treats 80 gallons of fuel). AMSOIL
Diesel Concentrate and Diesel Cold Flow Improver are now available in the
new, more convenient bottle.

8.2% More MPG
with AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants

Replacing popular conventional engine and driveline lubricants with AMSOIL synthetic lubricants in Class 8 diesel-fueled vehicles increases fuel mileage up to 8.2% according to the findings of an independent test facility.

Fuel accounts for roughly 37 percent of Class 8 truck operating expenses, and reducing fuel expenses is a top priority for truck operators.

AMSOIL is the leader in the race to develop fuel efficient low-viscosity lubricants for trucking and other heavy-duty diesel applications. Independent laboratory testing shows AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil in the engine and AMSOIL synthetics in the drivetrain provide up to 8.2 percent more miles-per-gallon than other popular lubricants provide.

Introduction
At the request of AMSOIL INC., an independent research institute conducted a month-long test com-paring the fuel consumption of Class 8 diesel trucks equipped with AMSOIL synthetic lubricants to Class 8 diesel trucks equipped with conventional lubricants.

The research institute used the SAE J1321 Joint TMC/SAE Fuel Consumption Test Procedure-Type II, an industry standard test procedure for comparing in-service fuel consumption of a vehicle operated under two conditions, one with the control lubricants in place, the other with the test lubricants in place.

Vehicles and Route
The three test and one control vehicles were 1995 International Model 9200 truck-tractors with Cummins M-11 engines (rated at 350 hp at 1600 rpm), Fuller RTXF 14710B transmissions, Eaton Model DS/RS 404 drive axles (3.90 ratio), 11R-24.5 low-profile tires and new oil and air filters. All four vehicles had been operated between 250,000 and 285,000 miles prior to the study.

The trucks were equipped with auxiliary weigh fuel tanks and quick disconnect couplings to facilitate accurate data gathering. Each truck pulled a 45-foot long flatbed trailer equipped with 11R-24.5 low-profile tires and loaded with concrete blocks so that the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of each vehicle was 75,550 +/-100 lbs.

The test route represented typical long-haul interstate highway operations, with asphalt road surfaces and generally flat terrain. The low traffic density route covered a total of 40 miles with a 20-mile southbound segment and the return north-bound segment. Fuel consumption was measured separately for each direction.

Lubricants and Fuels
The control lubricants were Shell Rotella T 15W-40 for the engines, Quaker State SAE 90 for the transmissions and Citco 85W-140 for the drive axles. The control truck used the control lubricants for all driving segments and the test trucks used the control lubricants for their baseline segments.

The test lubricants were AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil for the engines, AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 20W-50 Racing Oil for the transmissions and AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube for the drive axles. The test vehicles used the test lubricants for their test segments.

All vehicles used Exxon No. 2 diesel fuel dispensed from the same storage tank for all driving segments.

Procedure
Each test vehicle ran a baseline segment, in which the truck was equipped with the control lubricants, and three test segments, in which it was equipped with test lubricants. The control vehicle concurrently ran each driving segment using control lubricants.

Conditions including speed, tire pressure, headlight and fan use and window openings were held constant between all vehicles in each driving segment. Finally, testing proceeded only if wind direction, wind speed and temperature were within test parameters.

Results
The weight of fuel consumed by each test vehicle and the weight of fuel consumed by the control vehicle in each driving segment were used to determine the percentage of fuel saved and the percentage fuel efficiency improvement obtained by the test lubricants. Results outside 2 percent of the norm were discarded.

Findings
The vehicles equipped with AMSOIL synthetic lubricants in the engines, transmissions and drive axles demonstrated up to an 8.2 percent increase in miles per gallon (mpg) over the mpg obtained by the vehicles equipped with the control lubricants.

Discussion
Test conditions were held close to ideal for maximum fuel economy. In many instances of less-than-ideal conditions, the synthetic test lubricants would have provided even more fuel economy improvement. For example, synthetics superior cold temperature fluidity provides a larger proportion of fuel savings in cold operating conditions.

Additionally, while the present study did not include analysis of wear control, wear control is an important issue with low viscosity lubricants and one fully addressed by AMSOIL through additional testing.

Traditionally, the benefit of improved fuel economy provided by low viscosity lubricants is offset by a penalty in wear control. Such is not the case with Series 2000 and 3000 lubricants, as evidenced by Four-Ball Wear testing conducted by an independent laboratory (results shown on product labels) and a growing body of demonstration and on-road data.

For example, an ongoing fleet demonstration is providing evidence of the excellent wear control of Series 3000. Since January 1996, AMSOIL and a northern tier trucking fleet have been conducting a demonstration using Series 3000 in the 1996 Cummins N-14 ESP3 engines of five 1996 Kenworth class 8 trucks.

The trucks traveled 125,000 miles with-out an oil change and the rate of wear metal generation found in used Series 3000 samples was lower than that found in used control oil, Pennzoil Long Life 15W-40, which is changed at 20,000-mile intervals.

Additionally, the viscometrics of the AMSOIL fluids provide a wear control benefit in cold temperature applications since low viscosity fluids flow more freely in cold temperatures than high viscosity fluids do. Oils that flow easily in cold temperatures provide faster post-startup wear protection in cold engines than do less fluid oils. They also provide easier starting and reduced battery drain.

Finally, AMSOIL product users are protected by the AMSOIL warranty, which, unlike warranties offered by other oil companies, is not limited by time or mileage and does not require user registration and approval.

Conclusion
AMSOIL synthetic engine, transmission and drive axle lubricants provide a safe and effective means to significantly increase class 8 truck fuel economy.

AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Motor Oil provides better wear protection than these popular high viscosity diesel oils. In fact, independent testing showed the high-viscosity oils tested produced wear scars up to 45 percent larger than that of Series 3000.

What Does a Savings of 8.2% Mean?

Imagine a fleet of 100 class 8 vehicles running an average 120,000 miles per year at an average 6.5 mpg with diesel fuel at $1.35 a gallon. The fleet spends $2,492,308 on fuel annually. Now imagine the fleet uses AMSOIL products and improves its miles-per-gallon by 8.2 percent. The fleet now spends $2,303,427 on fuel annually.

Thats a savings of $188,881! That money could buy a years worth of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants for the fleet plus a years fuel for 3 to 6 trucks with cash left over!
