Hello, my name is Dave Mann. I am a Detroit Michigan  Truck/Automotive Engineer and Lubrication Specialist with 24 years OEM industry engineering experience.

I am also a longstanding Professional Grade member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). This prestigious position is ONLY granted to degreed engineers with documented professional work experience in the  vehicle and component engineering industry.

The purpose of this website is to provide a source of expert lubrication and filtration engineering and technical knowledge and assistance unequaled in the business. My primary focus  is to provide comprehensive technical information regarding engine and powertrain lubrication and filtration for the Ford Powerstroke Diesel, Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel and the GM Duramax Diesel.

Although I have been a Ford Engineer my entire career and specialize in the Ford 6.4L, 6.0L and 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel, I have extensive experience with the Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel and GM Duramax Diesel as well.

My area of engineering expertise encompasses all components and systems  on these vehicles, however my specialty is engine, chassis and powertrain lubrication and filtration.

Dodge Cummins Turbodiesel

The Dodge Cummins Turbodiesel Generation Three was released in 1998.5 and remained in production to 2002. This engine has 4 valves per cylinder and a centered injector and significantly increased power over the 1994-1998 Generation Two Cummins 12 valve inline 6 cylinder engine. The Gen Three engine block was strengthened for increased durability as well as re-designed to reduce noise. It utilizes a Bosch electronically controlled rotary fuel pump that produces 20,000 psi, which significantly increased power output. The concern with the increased power is the durability of the automatic transmission, therefore the engine has capacity for more power than it currently produces. Dodge offered a High Output model in 2001 that produced 505 lb.-ft. torque.

In 2003 Dodge released Generation Four Cummins Turbodiesel. This model utilizes an electronically controlled common rail fuel injection system. It also has a pilot injection system in which a small amount of fuel is injected and precisely metered to start the combustion process which lowers emissions at idle. Power is set at 250 Hp and 460 lb.-ft. torque. The HO version has 305 Hp and 555 lb.-ft. torque. Other improvements include heavier duty oil cooled pistons. In 2004 the Dodge Cummins Turbodiesel is available with a HO version that has 325 Hp and 600 lb.-ft torque with a factory installed 4 inch exhaust system.

Now that you've spent your hard earned money on the Cummins Turbo Diesel option now don't you think you owe it to yourself to use the very best oil in it?  And don't let your local dealership service center tell you that you you have to use their brand of oil to "maintain your warranty". That is a 100% false statement by the dealership, yet it goes on day in and day out. We constantly receive calls from customers that were told this by their servicing dealership. This practice is not authorized or condoned by the auto manufacturers, but the fact is it still goes on.

We are here to help you learn the facts and show you how you can use AMSOIL motor oil and get a superior product and also increase the  performance and add to the longevity of your Dodge Cummins Turbodiesel plus save time and money. The Dodge Cummins Turbodiesel is an excellent vehicle and exceptionally well engineered by Dodge and Cummins, however there are ways to make the performance and longevity even better with AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants.

What About the Competition?

Fact is the competition does not even come close to AMSOIL's performance and quality! AMSOIL INC. has no fear of increased competition from other oil companies on any level, whether it be performance of service life.

Take a look at how AMSOIL performs against the competition:

Take a look at the varnish deposits in this picture. These are the results of a severe high temperature deposit test.  The one at the far right is AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Diesel oil and the others are major brand petroleum diesel oils. (left to right: Chevron Delo 400, Cummins Premium Blue, Shell Rotella T, AMSOIL 15W-40). The test clearly shows that AMSOIL keeps engines cleaner longer than other major brand diesel oils do. Which oil would you rather have protecting your engine?

Synthetic Oil Proven to Prevent Turbocharger Bearing Seizure

One of the many specific areas on a turbocharged engine, such as the Cummins Turbo Diesel, which can clearly benefit from the use of synthetic oil is the turbocharger.  When a turbocharged engine is shut off immediately after a high speed run, "heat soak" occurs from the engine, and it considerably increases the temperature in the turbocharger.  Over a period of time this can lead to deposits that can block the oil flow to the turbocharger bearings, leading to turbocharger seizure.  Synthetic engine oils that are inherently more thermally stable than petroleum engine oils have been shown to keep turbochargers considerably cleaner than petroleum engine oils.  A poor petroleum oil will give turbocharger seizure, caused by blocked oilways, in under 100 hours of a severe "heat soak" test cycle.  A good petroleum oil will survive for 100 hours but with considerable deposits and incipient blocking. A good synthetic oil will maintain the turbocharger in almost "as fitted" condition.  Read on to learn the many more ways in which your Cummins Turbo Diesel can benefit from synthetic oil.

AMSOIL has been in business since 1972 and was the first company in the world to develop an API (Automotive Petroleum Institute) rated synthetic lubricant for automotive applications.   They coined the phrase "extended drain intervals" 30 years ago and have been on the leading edge of technology and innovation ever since then.  We have many satisfied customers using AMSOIL products in both their commercial, trucking, fleet as well as personal, family and recreational vehicles. We hope you will allow us to show you a proven better way.  We are here to help you and are at your service to assist you in your advanced technology lubrication and filtration needs.

Specifically for the Cummins Turbo Diesel AMSOIL engineers and manufactures a 15W-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Oil  (as well as Series 3000 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Synthetic) that when used in conjunction with Donaldson Endurance ELF-7349 engine oil filter will allow you to travel 25,000 miles between filter changes and approximately 25,000 miles  between oil changes. If you use oil analysis you can usually go longer than 25,000 miles on the oil.  Other AMSOIL benefits include reduced sludge and deposit formation, extreme temperature protection, improved fuel efficiency and rust and corrosion prevention and it does not void any new vehicle warranty. AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants meet and exceed all API rated and Dodge specifications

Note that the Donaldson ELF-7349 Oil Filters are specified as 25,000 mile/1-year change interval in the Dodge Cummins. Filters for additional vehicle models will soon follow. These filters are the result of a partnership between Donaldson and AMSOIL. Click here for an article relating to the partnership between AMSOIL and Donaldson and these exciting new oil filters.

The other option is to install an AMSOIL Dual Remote By-Pass Filtration System.  With this system you only change your oil when oil analysis indicates.  The AMSOIL Ea full flow filter is changed at 25,000 mile intervals and the by-pass filter is changed at approximately 25,000 miles for normal duty service.   The AMSOIL 15W-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Oil  or the Series 3000 5W-30 HDD does not break down like conventional petroleum based motor oils, is much more shear stable and does not have the waxes, paraffins and by-products that come out of crude oil that is pumped from the earth.

The by-pass filter removes the particles that cause wear in your engine down to less than one micron (a micron equals 0.001 mm) and keeps the engine oil analytically clean so you do not need to change your oil for a long time, while still getting far better protection than someone that changes their oil every 3000 miles. We are experienced at installing these units and can provide you with exact installation instructions, tips, bracket prints and photographs.

The Performance Oil Technology Powerstroke Diesel vehicle #3 had over 87,000 miles on the same AMSOIL 15W-40 Synthetic Diesel Oil prior to changing to the AMSOIL Series 3000 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil.  Laboratory oil chemical analysis every 15-20,000 miles indicates the oil is perfectly suitable for continued service. Other customers have traveled well over 100,000 miles and oil analysis still indicates no oil change necessary.  I will mail you a copy of vehicle #3's oil analysis results with your product and technical  information package so you can see the data for yourself. In addition, the AMSOIL By-Pass filter will also remove up to a pint of water from your vehicle's lubrication system, which is especially important in a diesel engine.  Without this the water promotes rust, corrosion and rapid wear. Internal engine heat also creates acids which also wear the engine components.  The water and acids build and continue to work destroying your engine even after engine shutdown.

Oil analysis provides a big return for your small investment by extending equipment life by preventing premature component failure, reducing maintenance costs by eliminating unnecessary component changes and a decrease in downtime due to premature scheduled maintenance as well enabling calculation of optimum drain intervals that will reduce lubricant costs and assure maximum equipment protection.

Your average regular full flow engine oil filter will only remove wear particles down to the 20-25 micron range.  The filter cannot remove finer particles because the oil must be filtered quickly while removing most of the particles present in the oil, except the particles below the 20 micron range.  A study completed by Federal Mogul Corp. analyzing over 7000 main and connecting rod bearings concluded that 60% of all engine wear occurs in the 5-20 micron range.  This is why no matter how much you change your current full flow oil and filter, regardless of brand, that you still are not removing the particles that cause the greatest wear in your engine.

If you choose not to install the Dual Remote by-pass filtration system then the AMSOIL Ea Oil Filter would be of a significant benefit to the long term durability of your engine as well as allowing for 25,000 miles of service on the filter and 25,000 miles/1-year on the oil.

Ea Oil Filters feature advanced full synthetic nanofiber technology, making them the highest efficiency filters that are available for the auto/light truck market. They have an absolute efficiency rating of 98.7% at 15 microns and 50% at 7 microns.

When you reach 25,000 miles you can either change the oil and filter or take an oil sample from the dipstick tube using an AMSOIL sampling pump and send it into Oil Analyzer's Inc. using a pre-paid kit.  Oil analysis will indicate the exact condition of the oil and whether it is suitable for continued service as well as determining if there are any other engine components or wear items that you need to be concerned with.

AMSOIL has a complete line of synthetic oils, greases, transmission fluids, gear lubes, Two-Stage foam air filters, by-pass and full flow filters and filtration systems designed to extend the life of your vehicles and equipment and save you time and money.  In addition we also offer a preferred customer wholesale purchase option, retail purchase option or commercial account purchase option for businesses.  We also offer a Dealership Option for anyone interested in becoming an AMSOIL Dealer and/or purchasing products at wholesale cost.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil (AME) is a premium diesel oil providing excellent performance in all types of diesel engines where highly effective control of wear and deposits is vital. Built with heavy-duty dispersant/detergent additives, its 12 TBN chemistry neutralizes acids and controls soot thickening from EGR and blow-by to protect against corrosion, cylinder bore polishing (wear) and varnish/sludge deposits. AMSOIL AME resists heat and breakdown better than conventional petroleum oils for long lasting performance and protection.

AMSOIL, the leader in automotive synthetic lubrication, produced the world’s first API qualified synthetic motor oil in 1972. Trust the extensive experience of AMSOIL The First in Synthetics® to do the best job protecting your engine.

Extends Drain Intervals
AMSOIL AME can extend drain intervals far beyond those recommended for conventional petroleum oils. Its unique synthetic formulation and long drain additive system deliver the best possible engine protection, cleanliness and performance over extended drain intervals, reducing vehicle maintenance and waste oil disposal costs.

Advanced Soot and Wear Control Formula
AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine Motor Oil is heavily fortified with detergent/dispersant additives and is naturally resistant to soot. It keeps soot particles suspended independently, preventing them from attaching together to form larger, wear-causing particles. Viscosity increase is minimized and soot related wear is controlled.

Maximizes Fuel Economy, Reduces Oil Consumption and Emissions
AMSOIL AME has lower high temperature volatility (evaporation) than conventional petroleum oils. Because less oil vapor passes into the combustion chamber, oil consumption and emissions are reduced. Lower volatility helps AMSOIL AME retain its viscosity after high temperature service for excellent fuel economy and continued dependable protection.

Excellent Cold Flow Properties
AMSOIL AME remains fluid down to -51°F. It eases cold weather starting and provides vital start-up lubrication to prevent engine wear. AME outperforms conventional 15W-40 petroleum oils and greatly minimizes the impact of cold weather operation.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
AMSOIL Series 3000 100% Synthetic 5W-30 Diesel Oil (HDD) delivers extraordinary lubrication in both diesel and gasoline engines found in commercial, fleet and personal vehicles. By combining the industry’s premier synthetic technology with AMSOIL premium additives, AMSOIL HDD exceeds the higher performance demands of modern engines. It withstands the stress of higher heat, higher acid levels and excessive soot loading found in EGR equipped engines. AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Diesel Oil consistently outperforms conventional and synthetic diesel oils for long-lasting performance and protection.

AMSOIL HDD can extend drain intervals far beyond those recommended for conventional oils. Its unique synthetic formulation and long drain additive system deliver the best possible engine protection, cleanliness and performance over extended drain intervals, reducing vehicle maintenance and waste oil disposal costs.

MAXIMIZES FUEL ECONOMY
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil is energy efficient for reduced fuel costs. Its low viscosity minimizes “drag” associated with high viscosity oils, allowing the engine to operate more freely, maximizing power and fuel economy.

UNSURPASSED PROTECTION AGAINST ENGINE WEAR
In the Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D-4172B) AMSOIL HDD demonstrated better anti-wear performance than competitive petroleum and synthetic oils. Even under high temperatures and pressures, its superior film strength and anti-wear additives help prevent metal-to-metal contact. AMSOIL HDD reduces ring wear, cylinder bore polishing, oil consumption and valve train wear for improved engine life and lower maintenance costs.

CONTROLS SOOT THICKENING AND WEAR
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil is heavily fortified with detergent/dispersant additives and is naturally resistant to soot. It keeps soot particles suspended independently, preventing them from attaching together to form larger, wear-causing particles. Viscosity increase is minimized and soot related wear is controlled.

REDUCES OIL CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS
AMSOIL HDD loses only 6.7% of its mass to high temperature volatility (evaporation) in the NOACK test, outperforming all conventional oils. Because less oil vapor passes into the combustion chamber, oil consumption and emissions are reduced. Additionally, lower volatility helps AMSOIL HDD retain its viscosity after high temperature service for continued dependable protection and excellent fuel economy.

EXCELS IN EXTREME TEMPERATURES
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil resists thermal (heat) breakdown, oxidation and sludge formation better than conventional oils. And unlike conventional petroleum oils, AMSOIL HDD contains no wax. It stays fluid down to -60°F for improved cold temperature oil flow, reduced bearing wear and easier starting.

8.2% More MPG
with AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants

Replacing popular conventional engine and driveline lubricants with AMSOIL synthetic lubricants in Class 8 diesel-fueled vehicles increases fuel mileage up to 8.2% according to the findings of an independent test facility.

Fuel accounts for roughly 37 percent of Class 8 truck operating expenses, and reducing fuel expenses is a top priority for truck operators.

AMSOIL is the leader in the race to develop fuel efficient low-viscosity lubricants for trucking and other heavy-duty diesel applications. Independent laboratory testing shows AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil in the engine and AMSOIL synthetics in the drivetrain provide up to 8.2 percent more miles-per-gallon than other popular lubricants provide.

Introduction
At the request of AMSOIL INC., an independent research institute conducted a month-long test com-paring the fuel consumption of Class 8 diesel trucks equipped with AMSOIL synthetic lubricants to Class 8 diesel trucks equipped with conventional lubricants.

The research institute used the SAE J1321 Joint TMC/SAE Fuel Consumption Test Procedure-Type II, an industry standard test procedure for comparing in-service fuel consumption of a vehicle operated under two conditions, one with the control lubricants in place, the other with the test lubricants in place.

Vehicles and Route
The three test and one control vehicles were 1995 International Model 9200 truck-tractors with Cummins M-11 engines (rated at 350 hp at 1600 rpm), Fuller RTXF 14710B transmissions, Eaton Model DS/RS 404 drive axles (3.90 ratio), 11R-24.5 low-profile tires and new oil and air filters. All four vehicles had been operated between 250,000 and 285,000 miles prior to the study.

The trucks were equipped with auxiliary weigh fuel tanks and quick disconnect couplings to facilitate accurate data gathering. Each truck pulled a 45-foot long flatbed trailer equipped with 11R-24.5 low-profile tires and loaded with concrete blocks so that the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of each vehicle was 75,550 +/-100 lbs.

The test route represented typical long-haul interstate highway operations, with asphalt road surfaces and generally flat terrain. The low traffic density route covered a total of 40 miles with a 20-mile southbound segment and the return north-bound segment. Fuel consumption was measured separately for each direction.

Lubricants and Fuels
The control lubricants were Shell Rotella T 15W-40 for the engines, Quaker State SAE 90 for the transmissions and Citco 85W-140 for the drive axles. The control truck used the control lubricants for all driving segments and the test trucks used the control lubricants for their baseline segments.

The test lubricants were AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil for the engines, AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 20W-50 Racing Oil for the transmissions and AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube for the drive axles. The test vehicles used the test lubricants for their test segments.

All vehicles used Exxon No. 2 diesel fuel dispensed from the same storage tank for all driving segments.

Procedure
Each test vehicle ran a baseline segment, in which the truck was equipped with the control lubricants, and three test segments, in which it was equipped with test lubricants. The control vehicle concurrently ran each driving segment using control lubricants.

Conditions including speed, tire pressure, headlight and fan use and window openings were held constant between all vehicles in each driving segment. Finally, testing proceeded only if wind direction, wind speed and temperature were within test parameters.

Results
The weight of fuel consumed by each test vehicle and the weight of fuel consumed by the control vehicle in each driving segment were used to determine the percentage of fuel saved and the percentage fuel efficiency improvement obtained by the test lubricants. Results outside 2 percent of the norm were discarded.

Findings
The vehicles equipped with AMSOIL synthetic lubricants in the engines, transmissions and drive axles demonstrated up to an 8.2 percent increase in miles per gallon (mpg) over the mpg obtained by the vehicles equipped with the control lubricants.

Discussion
Test conditions were held close to ideal for maximum fuel economy. In many instances of less-than-ideal conditions, the synthetic test lubricants would have provided even more fuel economy improvement. For example, synthetics superior cold temperature fluidity provides a larger proportion of fuel savings in cold operating conditions.

Additionally, while the present study did not include analysis of wear control, wear control is an important issue with low viscosity lubricants and one fully addressed by AMSOIL through additional testing.

Traditionally, the benefit of improved fuel economy provided by low viscosity lubricants is offset by a penalty in wear control. Such is not the case with Series 2000 and 3000 lubricants, as evidenced by Four-Ball Wear testing conducted by an independent laboratory (results shown on product labels) and a growing body of demonstration and on-road data.

For example, an ongoing fleet demonstration is providing evidence of the excellent wear control of Series 3000. Since January 1996, AMSOIL and a northern tier trucking fleet have been conducting a demonstration using Series 3000 in the 1996 Cummins N-14 ESP3 engines of five 1996 Kenworth class 8 trucks.

The trucks traveled 125,000 miles with-out an oil change and the rate of wear metal generation found in used Series 3000 samples was lower than that found in used control oil, Pennzoil Long Life 15W-40, which is changed at 20,000-mile intervals.

Additionally, the viscometrics of the AMSOIL fluids provide a wear control benefit in cold temperature applications since low viscosity fluids flow more freely in cold temperatures than high viscosity fluids do. Oils that flow easily in cold temperatures provide faster post-startup wear protection in cold engines than do less fluid oils. They also provide easier starting and reduced battery drain.

Finally, AMSOIL product users are protected by the AMSOIL warranty, which, unlike warranties offered by other oil companies, is not limited by time or mileage and does not require user registration and approval.

Conclusion
AMSOIL synthetic engine, transmission and drive axle lubricants provide a safe and effective means to significantly increase class 8 truck fuel economy.

AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Motor Oil provides better wear protection than these popular high viscosity diesel oils. In fact, independent testing showed the high-viscosity oils tested produced wear scars up to 45 percent larger than that of Series 3000.

What Does a Savings of 8.2% Mean?

Imagine a fleet of 100 class 8 vehicles running an average 120,000 miles per year at an average 6.5 mpg with diesel fuel at $1.35 a gallon. The fleet spends $2,492,308 on fuel annually. Now imagine the fleet uses AMSOIL products and improves its miles-per-gallon by 8.2 percent. The fleet now spends $2,303,427 on fuel annually.

Thats a savings of $188,881! That money could buy a years worth of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants for the fleet plus a years fuel for 3 to 6 trucks with cash left over!
